Designer Rant #1: I know Photoshop, I'm a Designer

Every now and then, some assume that being a graphic designer is an easy task. Learning different type of applications is inevitable to us. The rush to deliver projects on schedule and deliver them with right specifications requires speedy magic on using apps. Be fast and organized with ones own work flow is the best we can do. But oftentimes, people get the wrong idea. Photoshop is the only way to being a graphic designer. Who did spread this disease? Since way back history, people use tools to be more efficient, of course, it'll continue to be applied as of today. Almost all people use computers to work efficiently. Making things easier and much more faster. Hmm saying it as "Faster, better, cheaper", yeah more money. As designers work efficiently with their own applications, they tend to praise and share it to people. But in latter, everything gets worst, people understood the wrong idea. Ohh the designer I knew back then uses Photo|Shop so you should also do, to be one. Great (!). Ok, let's first ask Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphic_designer)
... Current graphic designer jobs demand proficiency in one or more graphic design software programs, relevant to the job function, such as proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite. ...
Truly, the design industry already set a standard-like set of apps which are from Adobe. But this wouldn't mean that everything in graphic design is surrounded by these apps. Graphic design is composed of so many attributes that any one can choose at. There's typography, print, illustration, web design and so much more. Many companies will require the proficiency on Photoshop, but it's not Photoshop itself that describes a person as a graphic designer. It's the so called 'talent' that make things look good, make objects pleasant to see and make them arrange in a way that solves business problems. Almost all can acquire the skill to use and manage a work flow with design oriented applications. And if they pursue the field of graphic design, they'll slowly appreciate how rockstar designers bring ideas to a viewable medium. Here are some phrases from famous designers interviewed in Helvetica Film.
"You can't do better design with a computer, but you can speed up your work enormously." by Wim Crouwel "If all these people have the tools to make good design, they realize that it ain't that easy. It's not just opening a template in Corel Draw or in Powerpoint." by Erik Spiekermann "It's not about having the latest version of whatever program. If you don't have the eye, if you don't have the sense of design, the program's not going to give it to you." by David Carson
These phrases summed it all. Applications won't create a design for you, it is still you who give flavor to your design. Bow, at maraming salamat po. :P

This is just the first one of my Designer Rant posts. There are still four to come, so don't forget to add my feed. :D

"It's the so called 'talent' that make things look good" - And with that talent, with constant practice, becomes skill.

It's good that you've quoted powerful statements from Helvetica Film. It's a slap on the face to those who still believe that an application alone is the key to good design.
